Nailed It! A baking show for people who don’t
A Netflix reality show involving non-professional and mediocre bakers, is a surprising hit.
These average home bakers are tasked with replicating a selection of extravagant cakes and fancy goods, while the show is merrily documenting their poor attempts and glorious failures.
The Irish Times recalled some of the cringe-worthy moments from contestants and called them truly awful. Forget the usual tensions when bakers miscalculates or forget an important ingredient in Cupcake Wars. Nailed it raised that to whole different level from one contestant mistaking salt from sugar to another who, despite doing a poor job at her unicorn cupcake seems so proud that at least she didn’t get her hair in it.
Nothing is sacred in this reality show. Even presenters who usually offer encouragement to contestants do the exact opposite. French pastry chef Jacques Torres (aka Mr Chocolate) couldn’t help giggling at the contestants ideas and his partner, Nicole Byer just straight out distracts them with comments on how bad they are doing.
Nailed It! could be accused of being a continuation of the cavalcade of cruelty that constitutes a large part of reality TV, with cheap laughs at the expense of others, the punchline being, these wannabe bakers saying “nailed it!” after failing but in the end the winner of the show gets to take home $10,000 and the chance to give baking a shot.
