P25M worth of smuggled rice seized by BOC
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized another shipment of smuggled rice worth P25 million, this time coming from Thailand and Vietnam.
BOC Commissioner Isidro Lapeña said the rice is consigned to Marcelo Rice Trading while the warehouse, located in Calamba, Laguna, is owned by Henry Uy and Jason Feng.
As of now, there is no record in the National Food Authority (NFA) that will show that there has been an import permit issued to Marcelo Rice Trading.
Lapeña said the consignee was given 15 days to produce proof it paid duties and taxes for the shipment.
The incident happened less than a week since President Rodrigo Duterte warned traders against manipulating prices of rice.
In June, BoC also intercepted at the Manila International Container Port (MICP) 200 containers of Thailand white rice, estimated to be worth P250 million, in what could be the “biggest rice smuggling” so far in this administration.
