PSA sees palay production declining by 1.8%

Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said the country’s palay output may have gone down by 1.8 percent in the second quarter of the year to 4.05 million metric tons (MT) from 4.15 million MT last year.

During the period, areas allotted for rice also went down to 932,000 hectares (ha) from last year’s 947,000 ha.

Despite this, PSA said some areas in the country like Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Quezon, Mindoro Oriental and Surigao Sur may have felt increase in production.

This, according to the agency, was driven by good pest and disease control and sufficient water supply during the cropping period.
