Starbucks employee mocks customer with speech impairment
Giant coffee chain Starbucks has been named as one of the best companies to work for but some ungrateful employees certainly don’t see it as they keep on doing things that will ruin the reputation of their company.
After receiving a backlash over a racist incident a few months ago, Starbucks is back in hot water after one of its employees in Starbucks Philadelphia allegedly mocked a customer with speech impairment.
Agence France-Presse reported that when a customer called Sam gave his order, he stuttered when providing his name to the Starbucks employee, who responded “Okay, S-s-s-sam”. And when he finally got his drink, its marked with a label “SSSAM”.
This was according to Sam’s friend Tan Lekwijit, who reported the incident on Facebook.
Lekwijit said Sam emailed a complaint to Starbucks regarding the incident but was only offered a credit of US$5.
“[Starbucks] missed the point,” Lekwijit said. “It was about how you treat people with speech impairments, not how you write names”.
“I am writing this not because I want to get anybody into trouble, but because I want to raise awareness among the employees. There are many people with speech disorders who are in a worse position than my friend’s and struggle with self-esteem and self-confidence,” he added.
Starbucks announced on Twitter that the employee had already been fired.
