Jon Bon Jovi’s Soul Kitchen inspires volunteerism and compassion
Did you know that aside from earning a celebrated career as a rock icon, Jon Bon Jovi is also behind a community kitchen project called Soul Kitchen under his Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation?
The mechanics of his community kitchen is quite simple. It serves paying and non-paying customers, mostly those who are in need. These customers instead volunteer their services or pay what they can in exchange for their meal.
One hour of volunteer time earns them a meal certificate that feeds up to four family members. For customers who can afford to pay, they are strongly encouraged to pay $20 which covers the price of their meal and helps the restaurant defray the cost of the meals for customers who are unable to settle their bill.
What a lovely idea. Even kids are being encouraged to donate their time.
As of July this year, the restaurant has served over 86,000 meals, 49 percent which are non-paying as opposed to 51 percent of paying guests. (ANGEL ONG)
