Zamboanga in ‘fiesta mood’ as cheap rice becomes available
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said consumers in Zamboanga city was in “fiesta mood” yesterday as the Department of Agriculture (DA) and other agencies of government open the DA TienDA Bigasan ng Masa to sell freshly-milled rice at P32 per kilo and newly-shipped government rice at P27 per kilo.
During the TienDA, families were allowed to buy five kilos of NFA rice each, while the DA’s freshly milled rice was sold at P32 per kilo with a limit of three kilos per family.
Commercial rice coming from private traders shipped in from the Northern Mindanao, Caraga Region, Davao Region and Central Mindanao Region was also sold at slightly higher prices.
“The staging of the DA TienDA Bigasan ng Masa marks the end of the declared ‘Rice Crisis’ in Zamboanga City which followed the closure of the routes for rice smuggling coming from Sabah, Malaysia which for so long was the source of the rice supplies of the Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu and Tawitawi region or ZAMBASULTA,” Piñol said.
Fruits from Davao and Central Mindanao and vegetables from nearby regions was also sold during the makeshift market.
