DA gathers hog, poultry raisers in preparation for ‘ber’ months
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol had met with the country’s poultry and hog raisers yesterday to assess their preparedness for the Christmas Holidays when demand for their products is expected to increase.
The meeting, which was attended by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) and the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS), also tackled the recent reports of outbreaks of the African Swine Flu in China and Europe and its effect on the local supply.
The country currently imports about 54,000 metric tons (MT) of pork every year under the Minimum Access Volume, while a considerable volume of Offals are also imported by meat processors.
The meeting, which was convened by the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries (PCAF), also assessed the state of the local poultry industry, especially with the lifting of the Special Safeguard Duties (SSG) on imported chicken.
