DA tells Bukidnon coop to buy yield of local vegetables farmers
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol has told Talakag Farmers Association to buy the produce of vegetable farmers, who have been suffering from low buying price.
To help the cooperative buy the farmers’ produce, the Department of Agriculture (DA) has stepped in by providing it a loan worth P20 million.
The DA will then facilitate the delivery of the vegetables to Metro Manila markets.
Three other Bukidnon towns – Lantapan, Similar and Imapasugong – are being eyed by the DA as sources of high value vegetables.
“While Metro Manila consumers are complaining about the high prices of vegetables, farmers in this cool mountain town are grumbling about the very low buying price for their produce. On the way to a forum with vegetable farmers in Talakag, I passed by a group of farmers sacking Cabbage which was harvested from a nearby field. A farmer said the price of Cabbage today in Cagayan de Oro was only P12 per kilo delivered to the buying station,” Piñol said.
Piñol said that the farmer even told him that there were times when the price was so low, they ended up feeding their vegetables to their horses.
“The woes of both consumers and farmers will soon be over,” Piñol said.
