DENR suspends all small-scale mining operations in CAR
The landslide that killed dozens of miners in Benguet has prompted the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to stop all small-scale mining operations in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
CAR is one of the regions that were badly hit by Typhoon Ompong, the strongest typhoon to hit Northern Luzon in recent years.
Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu has issued on Monday a cease and desist order (CDO) on small-scale mining operations in CAR. This, as the death toll in Itogon, Benguet is feared to have reached hundreds because of the landslide. Most of the victims are miners.
“The first phase, we will stop these [small-scale mining]. The second stage will be to relocate them out of those very dangerous areas. We have issued geohazard maps all over the country and these show the landslide-prone areas,” Cimatu said.
Policemen and soldiers will be deployed to implement the CDO.
