DTI to import rice too?
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), through Philippine International Trading Corporation (PITC), will also import rice on top of the planned importation of the National Food Authority (NFA).
Roque said in a briefing yesterday that the country will no longer rely on NFA when it comes to the importation of rice.
“Pagdating po sa bigas, ang mabuting balita, DTI na po ang mag-i-import ng bigas at hindi lamang commercial rice ang i-import nila,” Roque said, adding that the agency will import 25 percent broken long grain white rice that would be sold at P27 per kilo.
Roque explained that PITC, an attached agency to DTI, is technically allowed to import rice since there is no law that could prevent it.
As a start, DTI may import additional 150,000 metric tons (MT) of rice or three million bags of rice under government-to-government scheme.
