Imported rice to flood PH at the latter part of this year
It’s going to rain imported rice in the Philippines as the National Food Authority (NFA) Council, the highest policy making body of NFA, has just approved the importation of 500,000 metric tons (MT) of rice, following the approval of the importation of 250,000 MT.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol, who now serves as the NFA Council, said there’s a need to import more rice since the rice sector incurred the largest damage during the onslaught of Typhoon Ompong.
It was just last week when President Rodrigo Duterte forged the Executive Order (EO) formally returning NFA, among other agencies, under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture (DA).
The EO also reorganized the NFA Council, making Piñol the chairman of the highest policy making body of the NFA.
“The Council also approved the standby importation of 1 million MT for 2019. The message that we want to get across is that for those hoarding rice, you better release your stocks in the market now before these imported stocks come in,” Piñol added.
