NFA gets support from grains retailers, farmers
Amid the recent controversy the National Food Authority (NFA) is currently facing, the state-run grains agency said it got the support of Confederation of Grains Retailers (GRECON), Rice Millers Association, Provincial Farmers Action Council (PFAC), and Consumers Association.
NFA said that members of the farmers’ group PFAC expressed their appreciation to the food agency for offering a competitive buying price for palay when market prices become too low.
The groups also called for the strengthening of the food agency instead of abolishing it.
NFA said that instead of dismantling the NFA, the groups are asking President Rodrigo Duterte to help the food agency by increasing its procurement funds to be able to compete with private traders in buying palay produce from farmers.
Currently, the NFA buys clean and dry palay at P17 per kilogram with additional incentives of P0.20 to P0.50 per kilogram for delivery; P0.20 per kilogram drying incentive and P0.30 per kilogram for cooperatives or farmers’ organizations.
