PH orders swift entry of imported agriculture products
Soon the local market will be flooded with imported food items as President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the removal of non-tariff barriers as well as the streamlining of administrative procedures on the importation of agriculture products.
He made the order through the issuance of Administrative Order (AO) No. 13, which intends to tame rising price of basic agriculture commodities.
“Non-tariff barriers and certain administrative constraints, procedures and fees unduly add to the costs of importation and limit supply which in turn push up the prices of agricultural commodities to the detriment of Filipino consumers especially the poor,” the order, which was cited in a Manila Bulletin report, reads.
Duterte also directed the National Food Authority (NFA) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) to streamline procedures in the accreditation of importers and minimize the processing time of applications for importation.
They must also exempt traders that are already accredited from registration.
