Solon says Filipinos deserve better than ‘bukbok bigas’
The video of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol eating ‘bukbok bigas’ or weevil-infested rice made rounds in the social media over the weekend and some people are not happy about it.
While Piñol’s intention was to prove that rice that has been infested by weevil is safe to eat, Senator Francis Pangilinan said “Filipinos deserve better than ‘bukbok bigas’.
“If government officials can stomach weevil-infested rice, the people we all serve cannot. Weevil-infested even as rice prices are going up?” Pangilinan said.
According to him, the government must raise the standards for rice we feed its children as well as the standards for governance.
He then said that the repositioning of National Food Authority (NFA) as a government agency focused on buffer stocking, rather than its out right abolition, is a more prudent alternative.
“Rice stocks needed for relief operations during times of calamities or natural disasters cannot be expected to be provided by the private sector. This is where a reengineered NFA steps in,” Pangilinan said.
