Gov’t to impose SRP on rice by end-October
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said that the government will make sure that by the end of this month, the Suggested Retail Price (SRP) for four rice classifications will already be imposed.
“To protect the consumers, the DA-NFA [Department of Agriculture’s National Food Authority] will also implement a Suggested Retail Price for four classifications of rice – Regular Milled Rice, Well Milled Rice, Whole Grains Head Rice and Special Rice,” Piñol said.
“The SRP will be implemented by the last week of October when the traders and millers have already disposed of the stocks they bought at a higher price during the leans months,” he added.
The National Food Authority (NFA) Council, which is now headed by the DA, will likewise provide additional incentives of P3 to the P17 per kilo NFA buying price to encourage farmers to sell their produce to the government food agency.
To do that, the DA will provide drying facilities in NFA Buying Stations, which farmers could use for free.
“Additional incentives of farm machineries ranging from Turtle Tiller, Power Tiller, Farm Tractors, Rice Harvesters and even Solar-Powered Irrigation System will be given to associations and cooperatives who deliver huge volume of paddy rice to the NFA,” Piñol further said.
