Hoarders of 40,000 bags of rice caught
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said two Iligan City-based rice traders were arrested this week by a composite government team for allegedly hoarding 40,000 bags of rice.
National Food Authority (NFA) Acting Administrator Tomas Escarez said, as cited by Piñol, businessmen Sonia Payan, a Filipino-Chinese, and Jhonny Tan, a Taiwanese, kept the rice stocks in four warehouses in Iligan City.
Escarez said the two traders, who were charged with hoarding and for their involvement in cartel operations and profiteering, were the first to be arrested in the intensified campaign against rice hoarding ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte.
According to him, the documents in the possession of the two traders were inconsistent with their stock inventory and appeared spurious prompting the NFA to order the seizure.
