NFA gears for aggressive palay procurement
The National Food Authority (NFA) said it is optimistic it will be able to buy more palay from local farmers as the NFA Council, now headed by Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol, has already approved an additional incentive of P3.00 per kilogram (/kg) in the agency’s palay procurement support price of P17.00.
Aside from the P3/kg, there will also be P0.70/kg delivery and drying incentives, bringing the NFA’s effective buying price to as much as P20.70/kg.
NFA’s new procurement program with the additional incentive will be launched in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro on Friday.
Under the new procurement price, farmers who will deliver clean and dry palay to NFA will get P17/kg and total incentives of P3.70/kg.
Piñol said the association or cooperative where the farmer belongs will also get a bonus of machinery and equipment like tractors, harvesters and even Solar Powered Irrigation System for huge volumes of rice delivered.
NFA Deputy Administrator Tomas R. Escarez, who was designated by the NFA Council as Officer-In-Charge of the NFA, welcomed this move as it will enable the agency to build up its food security buffer stocks from local harvest.
For 2018, the NFA targets to buy 2.6 million bags of palay.
With the additional incentives, Escarez is optimistic the agency could meet this procurement target.
