NFA sets focus on local palay procurement
The National Food Authority (NFA) Council launched yesterday its national procurement program for locally produced paddy rice in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, which would pay farmers up to P20.70 per kilo.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said the Occidental Mindoro activity will come a full week ahead of the start of the national palay procurement on October 19.
The procurement program will be focused in areas where the buying price of paddy rice is considerably low.
These areas include Mindoro Island, Panay Island, Negros Island and many parts of Mindanao.
The Department of Agriculture (DA), now the mother agency of the NFA, will support the palay procurement program by offering the following incentives: priority in the Production Loan Easy Access Program (PLEA) of the DA amounting to P50,000 per hectare; free use of drying facilities to be established in NFA buying stations; and bonus of machinery and equipment like tractors, harvesters, and even Solar Powered Irrigation System (SPIS) for huge volumes of rice delivered.
“The palay procured this harvest season will be part of the buffer stocks of the NFA for 2019 as part of President Rodrigo Duterte’s program to increase the country’s rice reserves,” Piñol said.
