PH to import 150,000 MT of sugar
The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) said the country will import 150,000 metric tons (MT) of sugar, which is only half of the 300,000 MT of sugar that Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said the country will import.
Yesterday, SRA issued Sugar Order No. 2 (SO2), which said the importation should not exceed 150,000 MT.
SO 2 also allowed end-users of sugar or sugar-using industries to participate in the import program provided they will register as international sugar traders.
SRA said sugar imported under this program must arrive no later than December 31.
Any volume that will arrive shall be classified as ‘C’ sugar or reserved sugar before eligible importers can be allowed to reclassify it to ‘B’ sugar or domestic sugar.
