Proposal to allow major retailers to import 350,000 MT of rice gets green light
Tha National Food Authority (NFA) Council, the highest policy making body of the NFA, gave the green light to the proposal of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to allow major retailers to directly import 350,000 metric tons (MT) of rice.
This importation is on top of the 750,000 MT that the NFA will import within this quarter.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said this decision was made during the NFA Council meeting held yesterday.
For his part, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said in an earlier report that the agency already invited major supermarket chains to conduct the importation program.
This would be on the condition that they will sell the imported rice for P38 per kilo, the pre-inflation price of the main staple food before it went up to P44 to P45 a kilo, a report in Manila Bulletin showed.
